Piedrahíta, flying paradise

Piedrahíta is a stately town with a past linked to the Alba Family. Endowed with an interesting historical heritage, Piedrahíta was recognised as a Cultural Site in 2008 and is rich with Historical Monuments. that include the Church of Santa Maria La Mayor ( XIII Century), the Carmelite Convent (XV Century), the remnants of the Santo Domingo Convent (XIV Century), la Plaza Mayor (The Main Square), the Old City Walls, the House of the Poet Gabriel y Galan and the Palace and gardens of the Dukes of Alba (XVIII Century). They were all key to its development, and made of Piedrahíta a crossroads of Artists and Intellectuals, e.g. Francisco de Goya.

It is a privileged site for sports such as paragliding and hand gliding, and it is internationally renowned as an ideal flying site, various championships are held in this beautiful scenery.

Located at the foot of Peñanegra Mountain (literally Black Hilltop), which is part of the Gredos Mountain Range, Piedrahíta offers breath-taking views and a beautiful countryside for horseback riding, cycling and hiking. From Piedrahíta you have easy access to high mountain sports and outings, such as hiking in the Gredos Mountain range, climbing in the granite Galayos Mountain, rafting in the currents of the upper Tormes River, or skiing and snowboarding at Covatilla Station on the Bejar mountain, only 20 km away!

However, we must not loose sight of Piedrahíta's rich gastronomic offer, including both “tapas” (small snacks,) and local specialties: “patatas revolconas” (special preparation of spicy smashed potatoes), roast suckling pig, a great variety of meats, as well as jamón, chorizo and pumpkin black pudding. There also local festivities and celebrations, such as the “Romería de la Virgin de la Vega” (a day long procession on Whit Monday), the “Piedrahíta Goyesca“, a colourful Fair held towards the end of June when Piedrahíta looks back to the Goya Period, the Horse Fair in August, the “Fiestas Patronales” (Patron Saint Day) at the beginning of September or the Gastronomic Fair, “ Piedrahíta Tapa”, during the Public Holiday weekend around October 12th to celebrate the Discovery of America. Let´s not forget the nightlife that this Capital of the Corneja Valley offers with its terraces and pubs. And best of all these festivities can be enjoyed within walking distance so no cars needed!
